As per reports, a fire broke out at a waste recycling facility in Hwaseong, approximately 45 km southwest of Seoul, on Wednesday (16 September) at around 1358 hours (local time). Combustible waste materials caught fire inside the facility, prompting fire authorities to increase the emergency response level.
• Fire authorities initially issued response level 1 at 1415 hours (local time) and raised it to level 2 four minutes later due to the presence of flammable waste and the risk of the fire spreading. A total of 67 firefighters and 30 pieces of firefighting equipment were initially deployed to the site.
• Nine facility officials who were inside the plant at the time of the incident evacuated safely. A woman sustained burns to her right arm, while no other casualties have been reported.
• Thick black smoke spread across the surrounding area, prompting the Hwaseong city government to issue an emergency text alert advising people nearby to keep their windows closed and exercise caution.
• Firefighting operations are ongoing, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
