According to reports, farmer organisations in Punjab have announced a railway track blockade at Devi Dass Pura in Amritsar district at 1200 hours on Wednesday (07 May), protesting against the alleged inadequate compensation for land acquired by the government.

• The protest is directed at both the central and Punjab state governments. Farmers claims that repeated assurances from the Gurdaspur administration to halt land confiscation until compensation is cleared have not been honoured.
• Farmer leaders have alleged that the government’s actions reflect suppression of democratic rights and favouritism towards corporate development in the region.
• A call has been made for mass mobilisation of farmers at the railway blockade site.
