As per reports, the Government of Tanzania is in the final stages of initiating the expansion of the Kitonga Mountain road section in Iringa Region, upgrading the existing two-lane configuration to a four-lane carriageway on Thursday (26 February).

• The project covers approximately seven kilometers along a strategic segment of the TANZAM Highway, a major corridor connecting inland regions and neighboring countries to the Port of Dar es Salaam.
• According to the Minister of Works, Abdallah Ulega, the expansion is intended to reduce persistent traffic congestion and enhance road safety on the mountainous stretch, which has experienced a significant increase in daily vehicle volumes from approximately 1,700 to 3,400 vehicles per day.
• The upgraded design will include two lanes in each direction, installation of street lighting throughout the section, and placement of protective curbs to reduce the risk of vehicles veering into ravines.
• The Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) has indicated that the estimated cost for expanding the seven-kilometer section is approximately TZS 59.2 billion, with an additional TZS 16.2 billion allocated for rehabilitation of the existing two-lane road.
