As per reports, the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) has announced the final results of the 01 June national election on Sunday (21 June), confirming a parliamentary majority for the ruling Prosperity Party.
• Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s Prosperity Party secured 438 of 501 seats in the House of Representatives, according to NEBE’s final results announced Sunday (21 June).
• The new parliament is expected to convene in October to re-elect Abiy Ahmed for a further five-year term.
• Insecurity in the Oromia and Amhara regions resulted in 143 polling stations failing to open during the election, per NEBE.
• Fighting between the Fano armed group and federal forces in Amhara, and between federal forces and Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) rebels in Oromia, has been cited as the primary driver of instability surrounding the vote.
• Opposition figures, including All Ethiopia Unity Party candidate Yitayal Assefa, have described the contest as heavily tilted toward the ruling party, with opposition members reporting harassment during the campaign period.
