As per reports, around a hundred people gathered in front of the offices of Minister Bernard Drainville in Montreal on Sunday (07 September) to denounce the Quebec government’s education budget cuts and demand greater reinvestment.
• Organized by the United for School movement, the demonstration included parents, students, school staff, and union members equipped with pots, drums, whistles, and placards.
• Despite the government’s recent reversal to reinvest CAD 540 million into education, protestors argue the amount remains insufficient due to rising student numbers and increasing costs of living. The movement described the current restrictions as the ‘worst budget cuts in the history of Quebec,’ highlighting hiring freezes, staff shortages, and the elimination of essential roles such as psychoeducators and support specialists.
• Union flags from the Fédération autonome de l’enseignement (FAE), Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), Centrale des syndicats du Québec (CSQ), and Confédération des syndicats nationaux (CSN) were visible, underscoring strong labour backing. Several politicians also joined the protest, including Québec solidaire’s Ruba Ghazal and Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois.
• Parallel demonstrations occurred in Gatineau and Chicoutimi, reflecting a province-wide mobilisation on Sunday (07 September). Protestors warn that continued disinvestment risks pushing families toward private education, further weakening Quebec’s public school system.
