As per reports, a significant reduction in the water supply from the Cutzamala System, caused by lower-than-usual rainfall, has resulted in citizens in various mayor’s offices across Mexico City experiencing a critical shortage of drinking water, leading to demonstrations on Wednesday (31 January).

• The crisis, ongoing since the beginning of the year, has triggered widespread protests in neighborhoods such as Azcapotzalco, Coyoacán, Álvaro Obregón and Cuauhtémoc.
• Demonstrators demand access to basic water needs, prompting the head of government, to assure citizens that a dedicated team is actively working to address the situation by deploying water pipes to affected areas.
• The gravity of the situation is exacerbated by reports indicating that 40 percent of the available drinking water is wasted daily, primarily due to failures and ruptures in the hydraulic network.
• The National Water Commission (Conagua) has also initiated emergency liquid supply operations in multiple states to address the widespread shortage.
