As per reports, a powerful nor’easter has been impacting the US East Coast since the weekend of October 11-12, with high winds, heavy surf, and extreme high tides. Flooding and coastal erosion have been reported from the Carolinas through New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
The storm is ongoing, with coastal areas from Virginia to New England still experiencing high winds, rough surf, and tidal flooding as of 12 and 13 October.
• In Delaware, Bowers Beach experienced extreme high tide flooding around noon on Sunday (12 October), submerging streets along the Delaware Bay.
• In North Carolina, nine homes in Buxton have collapsed in recent weeks due to cumulative flooding, and Highway 12 on Hatteras Island was closed on October 12 due to inundation. Additional homes are at risk of collapse.
• Charleston, South Carolina, saw roads flooded, causing closures. Pine Island recorded wind gusts up to 58 mph.
• Virginia Beach is facing river flooding with rivers rising 2–4 feet.
• Ocean City, Maryland, experienced nearly 50 mph gusts and waves overtopping beachfront areas.
• New Jersey’s Jersey Shore, including Seaside Heights and Monmouth County, faced large waves and boardwalk closures. A state of emergency has been declared.
