The China Meteorological Administration (CMA) issued a blue alert for strong winds and a blue alert for sandstorms at 0600 hours (local time) on Thursday (02 April). The alerts were issued as northern China is expected to experience strong winds, temperature drops, dust storms and rain or snow, while southern China may experience heavy rainfall and severe convective weather.
The alerts are valid from 0800 hours (local time) on Thursday (02 April) to 0800 hours (local time) on Friday (03 April). Authorities have advised the public to monitor weather updates and take precautions due to the complex weather conditions expected over the next several days.
• Strong winds with speeds of force 04-06 and gusts up to force 07 are expected across parts of eastern Xinjiang, the southern Xinjiang basin, most of Inner Mongolia, central and western Gansu, northern Ningxia, most of Qinghai, northern Tibet and eastern Yunnan.
• Some areas of central and western Inner Mongolia, the Hexi Corridor in Gansu, northern Tibet and northern Qinghai may experience stronger winds of force 07-08 with gusts reaching force 09.
• Blowing sand or dust is expected across parts of eastern and southern Xinjiang, northwestern Qinghai, central and western Inner Mongolia, central and western Gansu, most of Ningxia and northern Shaanxi, with localized sandstorms possible in western Inner Mongolia and western Gansu.
• Temperatures across Northwest China, North China, central and southern parts of Northeast China, the Huanghuai region and central and western Inner Mongolia are expected to drop by approximately 04 to 06 degrees Celsius, with some areas experiencing temperature decreases exceeding 08 degrees Celsius between Thursday-Saturday (02-04 April).
• Light to moderate rain or thunderstorms are forecast in parts of northern North China, central and eastern Inner Mongolia, Liaoning and Jilin, with localized heavy rainfall and convective weather including strong winds and hail.
• Heavy snowfall or blizzard conditions may occur in parts of northeastern Inner Mongolia and western Heilongjiang.
• Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected across parts of Guizhou, Jiangnan and South China between Thursday-Saturday (02-04 April).
• Some areas of Guizhou, central and southern Jiangnan, northern Guangxi and Guangdong may experience short-duration heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, strong winds or hail.
• Dense fog is forecast across parts of central and southern Jiangsu on the morning of Thursday (02 April), with visibility in some areas dropping below 200 metres.
• Marine areas including the Yellow Sea, coastal waters of the Shandong Peninsula, coastal waters of Jiangsu, waters near Qingdao Port and coastal areas near the Liaoning Peninsula may experience visibility below 500 metres due to fog between Thursday (02 April) and Friday (03 April).
