As per reports, the main train station in Groningen officially closed on Saturday (10 May), for a 64-day period until 12 July, to accommodate major redevelopment and construction work, as confirmed by Dutch media and infrastructure authorities.
• No Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) trains will stop at the station during key periods, including a complete closure during the opening weekend and again from 14 June to 12 July. Train services will be significantly reduced, with partial operations between certain stations and full closures at designated times.
• Train services will be significantly reduced, with partial operations between certain stations and full closures at designated times.
• The large-scale infrastructure project encompasses the construction of a pedestrian tunnel, relocation of the existing bus terminal, and realignment and renewal of railway tracks. The objective is to improve connectivity and efficiency of transfers at the station once completed. During this period, buses will substitute for train services across various routes.
• This extensive upgrade is expected to cause substantial disruptions to regional and intercity train traffic. People travelling from the east of the province or from Assen will need to disembark at Groningen Europapark for the entire 64-day period. From there, they must use replacement bus services to Emmaplein, followed by a short walk to the central station. NS sprinters and intercity trains will also operate via Groningen Europapark for the duration of the closure.
• Bus replacements will operate across affected routes, especially between Groningen, Europapark, Assen, Veendam, Bad Nieuweschans, and other regional destinations.
