Closure Notification: Anti-corruption rallies scheduled in Metro Manila from Friday (12 September)

As per reports, students of the University of the Philippines have announced to take part in “Black Friday” protests against the Philippine Government on Friday (12 September), while protests by various groups are expected to continue till Saturday (13 September).

• During the protest, students reportedly walked out of classrooms while activist groups mounted rallies on Metro Manila streets as part of mass actions dubbed as Black Friday protests condemning alleged corruption in anomalous flood control projects.
• In addition, separate protest actions have reported at the Diliman and Manila campuses of state-run University of the Philippines (UP), with students walking out of their classrooms in different colleges.
• At the UP Manila campus, protesters marched beside a construction site of a college building and gathered in front of the Oblation statute to show their collective indignation. While protestors in both the Diliman and Manila campuses demanded accountability over the flood control controversy, while called for additional funding for state education.
• Meanwhile, the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) maintained full caution on Friday (12 September) as protests unfolded in different parts of Metro Manila. Although no major disruptions were reported, around eight small protest actions were monitored, including a 30-minute rally outside the House of Representatives.
• Meanwhile, estimates from the University Student Council stated that the protest drew a crowd of 2,000 state scholars from various UP colleges.
