As per reports, starting Monday (29 September) Chicago Avenue will be fully closed to all traffic between Larrabee Street and Peoria Street due to the reconstruction of the Chicago Avenue Bridge over the Chicago River and the adjacent Halsted Street Viaduct.
• The project, managed by the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT), is expected to continue until December 2026.
• Key project elements include the removal of the existing temporary Chicago Avenue Bridge and its replacement with a permanent tied-arch bridge, construction of a new riverwalk connection beneath the bridge, full replacement of the Chicago-Halsted viaduct, installation of a new traffic signal at Chicago Avenue and Jefferson Street, and modernization of traffic signals at three additional intersections.
• The project also involves replacement of street lighting, installation of protected bike lanes on Halsted Street, dedicated CTA bus lanes on Chicago Avenue, and corridor landscaping improvements.
• Detour routes have been established: eastbound traffic will use North Ashland Avenue, West Division Street, and North LaSalle Drive, while westbound traffic will use North Orleans Street, West Division Street, and North Ashland Avenue to rejoin Chicago Avenue.
