As per reports, China has advised its citizens to avoid travelling to Japan on Friday (14 November), amid the ongoing diplomatic tensions between the two countries over Japan’s alleged comments on Taiwan. Hong Kong issued a similar advisory on Saturday (15 November).

Following are the details:

• Japanese Prime Minister (PM) Sanae Takaichi reported told Japan’s parliament on 07 November that any attempt by China to annex Taiwan could warrant a military response from Japan.
• Beijing summoned Japan’s Ambassador to China following the comment, after which Tokyo also summoned China’s Ambassador to Japan.
• The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Chinese Embassy and Consulates in Japan reportedly issued a statement on Chinese social media, advising Chinese citizens to “avoid travelling to Japan in the near future.” They further stated that Japanese leaders made provocative remarks regarding Taiwan, severely damaging the atmosphere for people-to-people exchanges and increasing risks to the personal safety and lives of Chinese citizens in Japan.
• Following Beijing’s statement, Hong Kong authorities also reportedly urged residents to exercise caution in Japan, citing a rise in attacks against Chinese citizens in Japan.
