As per reports, bean farmers in Zacatecas have issued an ultimatum to all three levels of government, municipal, state and federal, announcing that if no definitive agreement is reached before Friday (22 May), they will block railway lines, effectively paralysing freight connectivity in northern Mexico.
• At a press conference, the producers announced the railway blockade is planned to begin at 1000 hours local time (1600 hours UTC) on Friday (22 May) and will be maintained indefinitely, for as many days as necessary, until a concrete agreement is reached with the authorities.
• As of Tuesday (19 May), producers remain encamped outside the State Congress, awaiting engagement from government representatives.
• The core dispute centres on the alleged unilateral modification of a commercialisation agreement signed before a notary public on 29 March 2026, which originally established a guaranteed purchase price of 27 pesos per kilogram of beans. Producers state the operating rules were subsequently changed without prior notice, reducing the effective payment to 16 pesos per kilogram and blocking regular acopio (government collection) of their harvest at official warehouses.
