As per reports, Cabinet Office Minister Nick Thomas Symonds has issued a warning over online posts inciting or organizing violence this weekend (10-11 August), as police brace for the possibility of further far-right violence in the coming days.
• Hundreds of people have already been arrested for participating in the scenes of violent disorder, while some have also been charged with offenses online.
• The British government is also considering changing the Online Safety Act designed to regulate social media companies, following the week of racist rioting driven by false information online. The regulations of social media platforms contained in the Online Safety Act became law in the UK in October 2023 – but has not yet fully come into effect.
• At present, companies would only face a fine if they fail to police illegal content, such as incitements to violence or hate speech. Proposed changes could see Office of Communications (Ofcom) sanction companies if they allow legal but harmful content such as misinformation to be published.
