As per reports, authorities in Bengaluru have lifted the ban on vehicular traffic inside Cubbon Park. The revocation applies specifically to the second and fourth Saturdays of each month, which are government holidays.
• The chief secretary has sanctioned a three-month experimental period to lift the ban, during which vehicles will be permitted inside Cubbon Park.
• Following this period, a committee chaired by the chief secretary will review the outcomes and decide whether to make the change permanent.
• The approved route for vehicles extends from Prof Siddalingaiah Circle, commonly known as Cafe Coffee Day Circle, to the High Court’s gateway. Key officials supporting this decision believe it will alleviate traffic congestion in the central business district.
• During a meeting, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) MN Anucheth stated that the current ban has adverse effects on other routes in the central business district during holidays.
• He advocated for relaxation of the current rules, stating that increased footfall in the CBD areas and Cubbon Park has led to high-density traffic, resulting in vehicles being parked in no-parking zones or motorists struggling to find parking spaces. Consequently, traffic has been moving slowly.
• The committee concluded that allowing traffic on holidays would only impact about 10 percent of the park and could help alleviate traffic congestion in the busiest parts of the downtown area.
