The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported an earthquake of 7.4 magnitude off the coast of Russia’s Kamchatka peninsula at 0237 hours (UTC) on Saturday (13 September). It occurred at a distance of 111 kilometres east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky city at a depth of 39.5 kilometres.
• The USGS intially reported that the eathquake was of 7.5 magnitude and later downgraded it to 7.4.
• The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre (PTWC) had initially warned that “hazardous” waves up to one metre were possible along the Russian coasts.
• The centre later stated that the threat of tsunami has passed.
