The Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG) reported a magnitude 4.7 earthquake approximately two kilometres northeast of Sarmi Regency in Papua Province at around 0815 hours (local time) on Sunday (18 January).

The earthquake originated at an estimated depth of 34 kilometres.
