Update on flooding in Manipur – Wednesday (17 September)

As per reports, following are the updates on flooding in Manipur as of Wednesday (17 September);

• Manipur government has announced the closure of all educational institutions, including schools, colleges, and universities on Wednesday (17 September).
• Following severe flooding in Manipur, caused by the breaching of the Iril riverbank and overflowing of the Imphal, Thoubal, and Nongdambi rivers, the state government closed educational institutions as a precautionary measure to ensure safety. The flooding has significantly impacted several valley districts, including Imphal East, Imphal West, and Thoubal, affecting villages and agricultural lands.
• On Tuesday (16 September), Thoubal district Deputy Commissioner Hannah Kahmei led and official team and inspected the flood affected areas and distributed relief materials.
• With most parts of Imphal East district reeling under flood, the state-run Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) has announced to evacuate all the patients admitted in different wards of JNIMS with immediate effect. No new admission shall be done till further notice, stated a circular issued by the hospital on Tuesday (16 September).
• The rainfall increased the water volumes of major rivers, with the Water Resources Department reporting that the Thoubal River is flowing above the high flood level, while the Imphal River breached its banks at several locations in Imphal East as on Tuesday (16 September).
• Rescue teams are trying to locate a man that got swept away by the Iril River in Imphal East. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), aided by local volunteers and security forces, is continuing the search operation. Authorities remain on alert, warning that more landslides and breaches could occur if heavy rainfall persists.
• In an aim to decrease the water level of major rivers, all gates of Ithai Barrage remained open, and some gates of Imphal Barrage and Thoubal Barrage have been opened to regulate the water level of these rivers. Meanwhile, those affected by the flash flood have been taking shelter in relief camps, and concerned authorities are providing essential commodities to them.
• Additionally, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for thunderstorm, lightning and squall across Manipur on Wednesday (17 September), except for Noney and Jirbam.
