According to reports, the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting reported the strengthening of a low-pressure system in South China Sea on Tuesday (10 June). Following are the updates of the tropical depression:
• The system is currently moving westward and is forecast to make a landfall near Hainan Island and Guangdong Province in southern China by the end of this week.
• Meteorological agencies, including the Central Weather Administration (CWA) and the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO), confirm that the system is organizing and could become the first named tropical storm of the year in the region. The system will likely be named ‘Wutip’.
• Heavy rainfall is expected across Hainan, southern China, and parts of Vietnam, with some areas potentially receiving up to 800 mm of rain. Taiwan may also experience heavy rain from the storm’s outer bands between Thursday (12 June) and Saturday (14 June).
• Experts also predict that the possibility of the storm changing direction and moving to the North is not ruled out, but the probability is not high.
• Parts of Thailand may not be directly impacted by the storm. However, it may enhance the southwest monsoon, bringing increased rainfall and possible flooding to parts of Thailand and the region.
