Update on flooding in New South Wales – Friday (23 May)

As per reports, floods inundated several areas in New South Wales (NSW), updates as of Friday (23 May) are as follows:

• Death toll in New South Wales floods rose to four, following three days of incessant rainfall that has cut off entire towns, swept away livestock, and destroyed homes.
• Emergency services personnel have stated that efforts to supply essential supplies have been increased after weather conditions have relatively eased, while around 50,000 people are still reportedly isolated.
• Authorities have warned residents returning to their flooded homes to watch out for dangers including contaminants and vermins.
• Several intersections and street signs are still submerged, with cars up to their windshields in water, after fast-rising waters burst river banks and flooded several rural towns in the Hunter and Mid North Coast regions of New South Wales.
• More than 100 schools are to remain closed on Friday (23 May), while thousands of properties are without power.
• Warragamba Dam, which supplies 80 percent of Sydney’s water supply and is currently at around 96 percent of capacity, could spill over soon after heavy rain overnight.
• The weather system is now moving south, with significant rainfall expected in Sydney and Newcastle.
• Port Macquarie residents are involved in rescue and relief operations; to drop supplies by boat to isolated residents in the town’s flooded North Shore community, on the northern side of the Hastings River. The North Shore residents are also without power, and both car ferries which access the area out of action.
• There are more than 140 SES warnings currently in place for the flood zone in NSW.
