As per reports, Aena, the airport operator, has notified workers at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport of its decision to implement restricted access to airport terminals during nighttime hours from 2100 hours (local time) to 0500 hours (local time), starting Wednesday (21 May).
• According to reports, this decision aims to limit terminal access to passengers and companions only during these hours.
• This measure follows recent developments involving a significant number of individuals spending nights at the airport. The resulting situation triggered discussions and jurisdictional ambiguity between the central government, the Community of Madrid, and the Madrid City Council regarding responsibility for managing the presence of these vulnerable individuals.
• Access during restricted hours will be permitted only for passengers with boarding passes, their companions (both for departures and arrivals), and airport staff. This step aims to ensure orderly access and enhance operational security during periods of low flight activity.
• Security deployment will be increased to 22 officers between 2100 hours (local time) and 0500 hours (local time), with document checkpoints at various terminal entry points—four at Terminal Four and five at each of Terminals One, Two, and Three.
• Guards are authorized to verify documentation and, in case of unauthorized access attempts, contact the National Police.
• The union emphasized that no formal communication regarding the restrictions has been provided to airlines, ground handling companies, or airport staff.
