As per reports, over 50,000 Los Angeles County workers began a two-day strike on Monday (28 April), in response to failed contract negotiations after the expiration of their previous contract in March.

• The strike is led by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 721, which represents a wide range of workers including public health professionals, social workers, custodians, clerical staff, and others.
• The strike is expected to disrupt services such as libraries, healthcare clinics, beach bathrooms, and public service counters at the Hall of Administration. Other departments like the medical examiner’s office and public works may also face disruptions.
• The union accuses the county of 44 labor law violations, including retaliation against workers involved in union activity and outsourcing jobs traditionally held by union members.
• LA County officials stated that they are trying to balance fair compensation for workers while managing financial difficulties and avoiding layoffs or service reductions.
• The strike will last until 1900 hours (local time) on Wednesday (30 April), potentially continuing to affect services and operations across the region.
