Description:

As per reports, a major forest fire occurred near Luglon in the Landes region of southwestern France at approximately 1430 hours local time (1230 hours UTC) on Thursday (13 August). The fire burned through approximately 600 hectares of pine forest in the Landes de Gascogne forest, around 25 kilometres northwest of Mont-de-Marsan.

• Approximately 400 people were evacuated, including residents from several homes in Luglon and people from a campsite in the village. Emergency response operations involved approximately 200 firefighters, two Canadair water-bombing aircraft and two Dash 8 firefighting aircraft.
• As of around 2330 hours local time (2130 hours UTC time) on Thursday (13 August), the situation remained complicated and the prefecture described conditions as unfavorable.
• The RD 327 and RD 14 roads were closed to traffic to the north and south of Luglon. Authorities are advising residents and other persons to avoid the affected area and facilitate the movement of emergency and security services.
• The Landes region is under an orange heatwave warning, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius recorded in areas including Morcenx-la-Nouvelle and Mont-de-Marsan.

Impact:

• The fire is expected to cause significant access restrictions around Luglon due to the closure of RD 327 and RD 14 and the ongoing evacuation measures. Road closures may disrupt local travel and access to surrounding communities.
• New wildfire ignitions may result in short-notice road closures, diversions or restrictions, particularly in rural and forested areas.
• Travellers undertaking outdoor activities may face increased exposure to extreme heat, particularly during afternoon hours.
• Travel disruption may increase rapidly if a fire spreads toward populated areas or key transport corridors.
• Logistics and supply-chain operations in rural areas may face delays or route changes if wildfire activity develops.
• Businesses operating in or near forested areas may face increased exposure to temporary access restrictions, evacuations or fire-related disruption.

Recommendations:

• Businesses operating in surrounding areas are advised to review evacuation and business-continuity arrangements and avoid sending personnel into affected areas unless necessary.
• Logistics operators should monitor road-access conditions and prepare alternative routes if firefighting operations or evacuations restrict local roads.
• Organizations should maintain communication with employees working in or near affected areas and follow instructions from emergency authorities.
