As per reports, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck the Sangihe Islands region of North Sulawesi at 0637 hours (local time) on Monday (08 June).
• The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) initially reported the earthquake as magnitude 7.9 before revising the magnitude to 7.7 following further analysis.
• The earthquake’s epicentre was located at sea approximately 236 kilometres northwest of Tahuna in the Sangihe Islands, North Sulawesi. Updated BMKG data placed the epicentre at coordinates 5.79 degrees North latitude and 125.14 degrees East longitude, with a depth of 47 kilometres.
• Following the earthquake, BMKG issued a tsunami early warning for parts of Indonesia. Areas placed under the tsunami early warning include North Sulawesi, Gorontalo, Central Sulawesi, North Maluku and East Kalimantan.
• BMKG stated that the information was released as a preliminary assessment and that earthquake parameters may be updated as additional seismic data becomes available.
