As per reports, the update on tensions in the Middle East as of Saturday (06 June) is as follows:
• Iran: As of Saturday (06 June), US-Iran negotiations remain stalled, with Iranian officials stating that discussions are at a deadlock. Tehran has reportedly linked progress in negotiations to the release of approximately USD 24 billion in frozen Iranian assets and warned that a resumption of hostilities could expand security risks across key maritime corridors, including the Indian Ocean, Mediterranean Sea and Bab al-Mandab Strait. Iranian officials also indicated that discussions regarding future operating conditions in the Strait of Hormuz are ongoing with Oman.
• US: The US continues to maintain that the ceasefire with Iran remains in effect while simultaneously enforcing maritime sanctions against Tehran. US authorities reported redirecting 129 vessels and disabling six vessels attempting to access Iranian ports since the start of the blockade. Additional Iran-related sanctions targeting companies, individuals and tankers were also announced. US officials continue to support diplomatic engagement but have warned that attacks on US personnel could prompt renewed military action.
• Israel: Israeli forces continue military operations in Lebanon, Gaza and the West Bank despite ongoing ceasefire arrangements. Israeli officials remain supportive of a US-mediated ceasefire framework for Lebanon but have indicated that operations against Hezbollah-linked targets will continue.
• Lebanon: Efforts to revive the Israel-Lebanon ceasefire remain uncertain despite agreement between Israeli and Lebanese officials earlier this week. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam publicly criticised the continuation of hostilities and warned against Lebanon becoming linked to broader regional negotiations.
• Hezbollah: Hezbollah formally rejected the latest US-mediated ceasefire proposal and continues military operations against Israeli forces. The group has linked any reduction in hostilities to an end to Israeli military operations in Lebanon, reducing prospects for an immediate de-escalation along the border.
• Gaza / Hamas: Hamas announced that a delegation led by senior official Khalil al-Hayya arrived in Cairo for discussions with Egyptian mediators regarding implementation of the Gaza ceasefire framework and potential movement toward subsequent negotiation phases. However, both sides continue to accuse each other of ceasefire violations, and security incidents remain ongoing.
• Oman: Petroleum Development Oman stated that operations at Mina Al Fahal oil terminal continue normally following reports of an explosion near offshore mooring facilities that sources initially linked to a suspected drone incident. No confirmed disruption to crude export operations has been reported.
• Strait of Hormuz / Gulf of Oman: Maritime security risks remain elevated across the Strait of Hormuz, Gulf of Oman and surrounding waterways. Reports indicate that Iranian-flagged oil tankers continue transiting the Strait of Hormuz, while US maritime interdiction operations and competing claims regarding naval incidents highlight the potential for further disruptions.
