Situational update on lockdowns in Downtown Bakersfield due to hostage situation and bomb threat on Tuesday (02 June)

As per reports, law enforcement authorities responded to an active hostage situation and bomb threat at a Chase Bank branch in downtown Bakersfield, California, at approximately 1300 hours local time (2000 hours UTC) on Tuesday (02 June).

According to the Bakersfield Police Department, a male suspect barricaded himself inside the Chase Bank building located at the intersection of Chester Avenue and 17th Street with an unknown number of individuals and was refusing to allow them to leave.

• Police stated that all hostages were reported safe and that crisis negotiators were in contact with the suspect.
• The incident began after authorities received reports of a bomb threat at the bank. A significant law enforcement response was deployed to the area, including approximately a dozen police vehicles, a tactical vehicle, multiple emergency responders, and a police command center vehicle.
• Several government buildings in downtown Bakersfield were placed on lockdown as a precaution, including City Hall North, City Hall South, the Development Services Building, Bakersfield Police Headquarters, and other nearby facilities. The Hall of Records building was evacuated.
• Authorities instructed the public to avoid the area surrounding Chester Avenue and 17th Street while response operations remained ongoing, as of 1615 hours local time (2315 hours UTC) on Tuesday (02 June).
• Reports indicated that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) were assisting local authorities with the incident.
