Update on Severe Tropical Storm Jangmi near Japan – Wednesday (03 June)

As per reports, following are the situational updates regarding Severe Tropical Storm Jangmi near Japan, as of Wednesday (03 June):

• Severe Tropical Storm Jangmi approached the Pacific coast of western and central Japan during the early hours of Wednesday (03 June) after passing near southern Kyushu. As of 0200 hours (local time), the system was located at 33.2 North 134.8 East and was moving northeast at approximately 45 kilometres per hour, with maximum wind gusts reaching 126 kilometres per hour.
• The Japan Meteorological Agency warned of extremely heavy rainfall across parts of western Japan, emphasizing that hazardous phenomena such as heavy rain, strong winds, and high waves will continue even as the system transitions. Kochi, Miyazaki, and Kagoshima prefectures recorded significant precipitation, with more than 400 millimetres reported in Shimanto, Kochi Prefecture, and over 300 millimetres recorded in Miyazaki City within a 24-hour period.
• Level 4 flood danger warnings, the second-highest alert level, remain issued for rivers in Tokushima Prefecture and parts of Miyazaki Prefecture. Authorities have urged residents in high-risk areas to evacuate due to the ongoing threat of river overflow and flash flooding.
• Significant transportation disruptions have been reported across Japan. East Japan Railway Company has suspended Odoriko, Narita Express, Azusa, and Fuji Excursion services in the Kanto region on Wednesday (03 June). Multiple JR West and JR Shikoku services, including sections of the Seto-Ohashi Line, Kusatsu Line, Wakayama Line, Kansai Line, Kisei Line, and limited express Kuroshio services, have also been suspended due to adverse weather conditions.
• Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways have cancelled approximately 600 domestic and international flights between Sunday and Wednesday (01–03 June). More than 300 flights, primarily serving Kyushu, were cancelled on Tuesday (02 June) alone. Singapore Airlines has also retimed multiple services operating between Singapore and Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya.
• Toyota Motor Corporation has temporarily suspended operations at 13 domestic vehicle manufacturing plants across Japan during the morning shift on Wednesday (03 June) due to the anticipated impact of the severe tropical storm. A decision regarding afternoon operations is expected following further assessment of weather conditions.
• Approximately 48,000 households across Kagoshima and Okinawa prefectures have experienced power outages, while more than 10 people have reportedly sustained minor injuries due to strong winds and storm-related incidents.
