According to reports, inclement weather was witnessed in Bengaluru on Thursday evening (21 May) causing travel disruptions. Following are additional details:
• Heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds was witnessed in many localities. Areas including Majestic, MG Road, Gandhinagar, Richmond Circle, Ulsoor, Indiranagar, RT Nagar, Shivajinagar, KR Circle, KR Market, Hebbal, Mysuru Road, Old Airport Road, Ballari Road, JC Road, Town Hall, Malleswaram and Corporation were affected.
• Several stretches were submerged as rainwater accumulated. Major congestion was reported on Ballari Road, Richmond Road, KG Road, KR Puram, Tumakuru Road, Magadi Road, Mysuru Road, Bannerghatta Road and Kanakapura Road.
• Civic officials cautioned that temporary power disruptions, uprooting of weak tree branches and minor damage to weak structures or harvested crops kept in the open were possible due to the weather conditions.
• Bengaluru City Traffic Police also stated on its X handle that traffic movement had slowed due to tree fall incidents in the following areas; from Swami Vivekananda Road Metro Station towards CMH Hospital, from Banaswadi–Horamavu Underpass towards Kalyan Nagar, from Richardson Road Park towards Davis Road and from Machalibetta Junction towards ITC Limited.
• Authorities also stated that slow-moving traffic due to water logging was reported from Windsor Manor Bridge towards Palace Cross, from both sides of Mysuru Road towards Veterinary Junction, from Brigade Road towards Opera Junction, from Majestic and Lulu Mall towards Khode Junction, from Anil Kumble Circle towards Queens Junction, from Pai Layout towards the City, from Garudacharpalya towards the City, from Sultanpet towards Sultanpet Cross, from Lalbagh East Gate towards Lalbagh Main Gate and from SJP Road towards Town Hall.
• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had also previously issued an orange alert under Nowcast for moderate thunderstorms with maximum surface wind speed ranging between 41-61 kmph valid till 2200 hours (local time) for Bengaluru Rural and Bengaluru Urban. Further weather warnings are to be issued as per situational requirements.
• IndiGo also issued a travel advisory on Thursday evening (21 May) that adverse weather conditions in Bengaluru were impacting flight operations.
