As per reports, the National Coordinator of Education Workers (Coordinadora Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educación, CNTE) announced a nationwide strike and an indefinite sit-in (plantón) at the Zócalo in Mexico City, effective 01 June, following the breakdown of negotiations with the federal government over salary and labour demands.

• The announcement was made following a National Representative Assembly that concluded in the early hours of Sunday (17 May) after more than 12 hours of deliberation among approximately 290 delegates from more than 30 union sections.
• The mobilisation is scheduled to commence at 0900 hours local time (1500 hours UTC) on 01 June with a march from the Ángel de la Independencia to the Zócalo in Mexico City, where an indefinite sit-in will be installed and a rally held. The march is expected to affect major thoroughfares, including Paseo de la Reforma, Juárez, Eje Central and 5 de Mayo.
• Sections from Oaxaca (Sección 22) will commence an early stoppage on 25 May, conducting local mobilisations ahead of the national strike date of 01 June. A National Forum is also scheduled for 30 May at the headquarters of Sección 9 to discuss matters related to the ISSSTE and social security.
• A National Forum is also scheduled for 30 May at the headquarters of Sección 9 to discuss matters related to the ISSSTE and social security.
• The CNTE’s key demands include the abrogation of the 2007 ISSSTE Law, the repeal of the educational reforms enacted under former presidents Enrique Peña Nieto and Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and a 100 per cent salary increase. The union rejected a 9 per cent salary increase announced by the Secretary of Public Education (SEP), Mario Delgado, describing it as insufficient.
• The union leadership indicated that the huelga will be in effect across the 10 states in which the CNTE has a presence. The CNTE also noted it is maintaining dialogue with agricultural and other union sectors interested in joining the protests.
