As per reports, following are the updates related to the ongoing unrest in Manipur, as of Sunday (17 May):
• As of Sunday (17 May), more than 500 vehicles, primarily goods-laden trucks travelling towards Imphal from Guwahati and Dimapur, remained stranded along National Highway-102 between Khongnem and T. Khullen in Senapati district for the fifth consecutive day. The disruption follows a total shutdown called by the Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) on Wednesday (13 May).
• Meanwhile, officials stated that security forces continue to conduct search operations and area domination exercises in vulnerable fringe areas across multiple districts. Authorities also confirmed that the movement of 130 vehicles carrying essential commodities along National Highway-37, connecting Imphal with Silchar in Assam, was facilitated under security arrangements.
• Strict security measures remain in place at vulnerable locations, with escorts being provided along sensitive stretches to facilitate safe transit. Additionally, a total of 115 check posts and nakas have been established across hill and valley districts to strengthen monitoring and maintain security.
• Officials on Saturday (16 May) confirmed the release of 38 individuals from the Kuki and Naga communities who were allegedly held hostage by armed groups in Kangpokpi and Senapati districts. The releases followed coordinated efforts involving security forces, civil society organizations, political leaders, and state authorities. Authorities further stated that negotiations and coordination efforts are ongoing to secure the safe release of additional individuals reportedly still in captivity.
• According to police, those released included 12 Naga women from Konsakhul village who were allegedly abducted in Makhan village, as well as 14 members of the Kuki community, including four men and 10 women, who had reportedly been held captive in Senapati district before being handed over to security personnel.
• Officials also confirmed the release of two Salesian brothers associated with Don Bosco, including one from Nagaland, from separate locations. In another incident on Thursday (14 May) evening, three individuals were also rescued and transferred to police custody in Senapati district.
• Officials stated that the administration, security agencies, political representatives, and civil society groups continue to work jointly to prevent further escalation and restore stability in the affected areas.
