As per reports, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of employee unions affiliated with Telangana State Road Transport Corporation has commenced an indefinite statewide strike from 0000 hours (local time) on Wednesday (22 April), following the failure of negotiations with a state government-appointed committee.
• During the discussions, senior officials including Vikas Raj, Dana Kishore, Sandeep Sultania and TGSRTC Managing Director Y. Nagi Reddy participated. The committee requested four weeks to examine and address the unions’ 32 demands while urging withdrawal of the strike.
• The JAC rejected the proposal, citing prolonged delays in implementation of prior assurances and insisting on immediate action regarding key demands including merger of TGSRTC with the state government, wage revision pending since 2021, handling of electric bus operations under RTC control, conduct of union elections, and settlement of PF and CCS arrears.
• Over 9,200 buses statewide, including approximately 3,200 buses operating in Hyderabad, are likely to be impacted. Services affected are expected to include city buses, intercity routes and airport-linked Pushpak operations.
• Nearly 60 lakh daily passengers across Telangana are anticipated to face disruption, with heightened impact expected on women commuters, daily wage workers, students and office-goers reliant on public bus connectivity.
• State authorities are expected to explore contingency transport measures including deployment of hired/private buses, utilisation of educational institution vehicles where feasible, and coordination with other transport operators.
