Locations affected: Nigeria
What:
On 01 August, thousands in Nigeria protested against the severe cost-of-living crisis, organized by the ‘Take It Back movement’. Clashes occurred between security officers and protestors in Abuja, Bauchi, and Borno, with police using tear gas. At least seven deaths were reported due to the incident.
Why:
Nigeria’s economic crisis worsened in June 2024 as inflation hit a record 34.19 percent. President Bola Tinubu’s reforms, including gas subsidy suspensions and currency devaluations, are believed to have intensified inflation. Protesters are demanding relief from the cost-of-living crisis, a reversal of gas subsidy suspensions, and better security in the northern regions.
So What:
- Officials, security forces, and governors have urged people to avoid protests, with some accusing organizers of treason.
- Roads were blocked by protesters or security forces, including highways in Abuja and routes to Eagle Square.
- Pro-Tinubu groups also staged protests[AN1] to challenge the demonstrators protesting against the government.
- Many businesses in the affected areas shut down on 01 August due to fears of violence.
- 24 hour curfews were imposed in Kano, Nasarawa, and Borno following reports of looting and property destruction. Security was tightened in Lagos and Abuja.
- There are reports that police in Nigeria may seek military assistance, if necessary.
- The US, UK, and Canada issued travel advisories, warning citizens of potential violence during protests.
Outlook:
The protest was initially planned until 10 August. However, organizer Omoyele Sowore has stated that the protests will continue until demands are met. In cities like Abuja and Kano, the situation appeared calm early on 02 August, but the risk of escalation and clashes between the protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out. Heightened security measures and traffic restrictions will likely cause delays. It is advised to avoid protest areas and high-risk locations. Organizations are advised to stay updated on the situation and follow security guidelines issued by authorities.
