As per reports, Harris County Public Health (HCPH) has confirmed the first mosquito of 2025 to test positive for the West Nile virus on Thursday (22 May). As of Friday (23 May), in response, mosquito spraying operations have been commenced to mitigate the spread of the virus.
• The infected mosquito was identified by the Mosquito and Vector Control Division (MVCD) in northwest Harris County, specifically in the area south of the intersection of Cypress Creek Parkway (FM 1960) and Tomball Parkway (State Highway 249), within the 77064 ZIP code.
• HCPH emphasised that the mosquito surveillance program plays a critical role in early virus detection and prompt intervention. The virus is transmitted by certain species of mosquitoes found in Harris County, and although most infected individuals show no symptoms, others may experience fever or headaches.
