As per reports, attacks on police posts, churches and a synagogue in Russia’s North Caucasus republic of Dagestan have left 19 police officers and several civilians dead. Six gunmen were also killed as of latest updates on Monday (24 June). At least sixteen people were taken to hospitals with injuries.
• Three days of mourning have been declared in Dagestan, in southern Russia which neighbours Chechnya.
• The allegedly coordinated attacks targeted the cities of Derbent and Makhachkala on the Orthodox festival of Pentecost, with an Orthodox priest among those killed.
• In Derbent, gunmen attacked a synagogue and a church, which were then set on fire.
• Although the assailants have not been officially identified, Russian media reported that among the gunmen were two sons of the head of the Sergokalinsky district near Makhachkala, Magomed Omarov, Osman and Adil. Magomed Omarov has reportedly been detained by police.
• Russian news agencies reported on Monday (24 June) morning that the counter-terrorism operation launched after the attacks had ended.
