Update on MPO teachers’ demonstration in Dhaka – Tuesday (14 October)

According to reports, teachers and staff from non-government educational institutions enlisted under the MPO (Monthly Pay Order) scheme staged a sit-in for the third consecutive day on Tuesday (14 October) at the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka.

• Teachers and employees of MPO-listed educational institutions started their long march towards the Secretariat from the Central Shaheed Minar on Tuesday afternoon (14 October), after the government failed to meet their demands within the deadline given of 1600 hours (local time).
• The march was halted with a barricade near the High Court Mazar. As of 1800 hours (local time), the teachers were staging a sit-in on the road in front of the High Court Mazar.
• Teachers’ representatives have announced that the teachers will remain at the site until 1200 hours (local time) on Wednesday (15 October). The teachers will then take up position at Shahbagh intersection and announce the next program. In addition, class activities will be closed in classrooms across Bangladesh on Wednesday (15 October).
• Traffic movement was significantly affected on the road from Doel Chattar to the Shikkha Bhaban, causing severe gridlock in the surrounding areas.
• Earlier, at around 1500 hours (local time), teachers and employees of MPO-listed educational institutions had temporarily suspended their planned long march towards the Secretariat after assurances from the Ministry of Finance and the Home Ministry during preparations at noon.
