Update on Manipur unrest – Wednesday (09 July)

As per reports, following are the latest situational updates on the Manipur unrest, as of Wednesday (09 July);

• The Manipur High Court has asked the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to file a detailed progress report on the investigation into the abduction and killing of six women and children from the Meitei community amidst the flare-up in the ethnic conflict seen in Jiribam district in November 2024.
• Joint security forces comprising the Indian Army, Assam Rifles, Manipur Police, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Border Security Force (BSF), and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) conducted a series of successful operations across multiple districts between 30 June and 06 July. Based on specific intelligence inputs, the joint forces carried out operations across both hill and valley regions, including Jiribam, Kangpokpi, Churachandpur, Bishnupur, Tengnoupal, Imphal East, and Imphal West districts.
• The week-long operation led to the apprehension of four cadres affiliated with various hill and valley-based insurgent groups. The forces also recovered a substantial cache of arms and ammunition, including 62 weapons, 30 improvised explosive devices (IEDs), grenades, and other war-like stores.
• Security forces continue to conduct search operations and area domination in the fringe and vulnerable areas across districts as on Wednesday (09 July). Movement of 235 vehicles carrying essential items along NH-37 has been ensured. Strict security measures are taken up in all vulnerable locations and security convoy is provided in sensitive stretches in order to ensure free and safe movement of the vehicles. Additionally, a total of 111 Nakas/Checkpoints were installed in different districts of Manipur, both in the hills and the valley and 12 persons were detained by the police at the checkpoints.
