As per reports, on 03 January, the Department of Justice (DOJ) filed a lawsuit over a law recently signed by Governor Greg Abbott, which allows state and local law enforcement to arrest illegal immigrants.

• The DOJ stated that it challenged the federal government’s authority.
• The lawsuit notes that United States brings the action to preserve its exclusive authority under federal law to regulate the entry and removal of noncitizens and that SB 04 allegedly impacts the federal government’s exclusive authority to regulate the entry and removal of noncitizens, and allegedly hamper the United States’ immigration operations and proceedings as well as affect the US foreign relations.
• Additionally, New York City filed a lawsuit on Thursday (04 January) against 17 bus and transportation companies that have contracted with Texas to take thousands of migrants to the city as part of Governor Greg Abbott’s immigration policies.
• Reports indicate that the lawsuit filed in New York State Supreme Court states that the city is seeking USD 708 million in damages from the companies, which is how much the city has spent to shelter migrants.
