As per reports, the death toll in the hooch tragedy in Kallakurichi district rose to 59 with one more person losing his life at the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College and Hospital in Salem on Tuesday (25 June).
• The Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) general secretary Premallatha Vijayakant on Tuesday demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy.
• The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo-moto cognisance of the deaths related to the consumption of spurious liquor.
• The commission has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director-General of Police asking for a detailed report on the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy within one week.
• According to the statement, the report from the authorities should include the status of the FIR, action against delinquent officers, treatment of the victims, and the status of the disbursement of compensation to the aggrieved families.
