Update on flooding and landslides reported in West Bengal – Wednesday (15 July)

As per reports, incessant rainfall caused disruptions across the hills of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and also in districts like Alipurduar by triggering landslides, damaging homes, inundating roads and localities, and severing key transport links on Tuesday (14 July).

• An increase in the water level of the Teesta submerged a stretch of SH12 at Teesta Bazar, temporarily cutting off road connectivity between Darjeeling and Kalimpong. The route was reopened around 1230 hours (local time) after the floodwaters receded.
• A fresh landslide was reported at SNT Dara near the Coronation Bridge in Sevoke later blocked NH10, the lifeline connecting Sikkim and Kalimpong with the plains.
• Roads under the Rongli-Rongliot block in Darjeeling, earlier choked by landslides, were reopened after clearance work.
• A house at Gielle-II panchayat under the Rongli-Rongliot block was damaged after debris accumulated around the structure. Civil defence personnel responded promptly and cleared the area.
• The Darjeeling district administration issued alerts through public address systems in vulnerable areas, including Kalijhora and Sevoke, urging residents near the riverbanks to move to safer locations.
• In Alipurduar, torrential rainfall over the past 24 hours affected areas including Hasimara recording 215.4mm of rainfall. In Hamiltonganj, floodwaters rose to waist-level in the main market, affecting locals. Business activities and traffic came to a standstill as roads remained submerged.
• The overflowing Basra river inundated large parts of Chinchula, Kalchini and Raimatang tea estates, affecting hundreds of residents. Waterlogging was also reported in Pradhan Bazar, Depot Para, Subhashpally bus stand, Stationpara, and Kalibari areas of Hamiltonganj.
• In Malda, locals of Shankartola Ghat in Mathurapur under Manikchak block, expressed concern as the Fulhar river started eroding its banks.
