As per reports, the following are the latest developments pertaining to the ongoing farmers’ protest in Punjab as of Tuesday (16 April), which had participated in the previous ‘Delhi Chalo’ movement:
• A large number of members and activists, of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) (Ugrahan) gathered on Monday (15 April) outside senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Arvind Khanna’s residence at Government Ranbir College Road in Sangrur and burnt an effigy of him. The effigy was burnt in the presence of state president of the union, Joginder Singh Ugrahan.
• The protest came after a similar protest in Malerkotla on 14 April, where BKU-Ugrahan protestors attempted to blockade a venue at a grain market where state level functionaries of the BJP and senior leader Arvind Khanna were scheduled to address office-bearers and activists of various wings during a ‘booth sammelan’ (booth-level conference) in view of upcoming Lok Sabha (parliamentary) election.
• The Malerkotla blockade was dispersed by local police authorities using force, prompting BKU-Ugrahan protestors to stage the subsequent protest outside BJP leader Khanna’s residence.
