As per reports, clashes between groups of demonstrators and police personnel continued across parts of Pejompongan and Slipi in Jakarta into the early hours of Friday (28 August), following the dispersal of crowds from the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia (DPR RI) complex and surrounding areas on Thursday night (27 August).
The following are the latest situational updates as of Friday (28 August):
• A section of the crowd remained along Jalan Pejompongan Raya in Tanah Abang until approximately 0000 hours Western Indonesia Time (WIB). Police personnel continued dispersal and area-clearing operations, while some individuals reportedly threw stones, discharged firecrackers and used suspected Molotov cocktails against security personnel.
• Further property and public-infrastructure damage was reported along Jalan Pejompongan Raya. Several vehicles parked beside the road were damaged, while cables, traffic signs and landscaped areas were vandalised or burned. The latest damage is in addition to the earlier burning of a motorcycle near the Pejompongan police post and damage to a public surveillance camera in the area.
• Police personnel detained several people suspected of participating in the clashes and property damage. These constitute additional field detentions; however, authorities have not released a revised consolidated figure beyond the 65 preventive arrests reported before the principal demonstration.
• Jalan Pejompongan Raya reportedly remained inaccessible to vehicles in both directions around midnight due to the continuing clashes, police operations, debris and damaged infrastructure. Motorists were required to turn back or use alternative routes.
• The situation also remained unstable around the Slipi Flyover and Slipi Petamburan intersection after 2300 hours WIB. Some members of the crowd reportedly returned towards police positions after tear-gas clouds cleared and continued discharging fireworks. Police personnel remained deployed around the flyover and adjoining sections of Jalan Letjen S. Parman and Jalan Palmerah Utara.
• The main carriageways of the Inner City Toll Road had reopened in both directions after earlier sterilisation by police. However, selected entrances and exits near Senayan, Slipi and Pejompongan remained subject to situational restrictions. Complete normalization of the affected TransJakarta routes and road accesses had not been officially confirmed at the time of reporting.
