Risk level: Medium Country: India

As per reports, the People Against SIR alliance has called for a gathering in New Delhi from 1300 hours (local time) on Friday (23 October), followed by a march towards the Election Commission of India (ECI). The mobilisation opposes the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and seeks restoration of voting rights for eligible voters whose names were deleted, alongside the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The following are the latest developments:

• Participants have been called to assemble near Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, Gole Dak Khana and Gole Market, before proceeding towards the ECI office at Nirvachan Sadan on Ashoka Road, near Patel Chowk. The campaign website confirms the Delhi gathering from 1300 hours (local time). Organisers have stated that, if police stop the march, participants will hold a peaceful ‘People’s Parliament’ at the interception point before concluding with the national anthem.
• The organisers have stated that they will proceed without seeking police permission. Prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita reportedly remain in force in New Delhi district.
• The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) reiterated its nationwide protest call. People Against SIR has also appealed for neighbourhood-level demonstrations. Abhijeet Dipke, Neha Bora, Aishe Ghosh, Prashant Bhushan, Prakash Raj, Rakesh Tikait and Tushar Gandhi are among those invited; attendance by all invitees has not been confirmed.
• The Delhi mobilisation is being coordinated by Voter Adhikar Manch, Krantikari Kisan Union, Jan Adhikar Manch, Progressive Student Organization, All India United Kisan Sabha and Trade Union Centre of India. Participants have been urged to join with the national flag.
• The platform has called for the restoration of Jantar Mantar as a designated protest venue and action over alleged police excesses against demonstrators, including women students and journalists. SKM has extended support to the mobilisation and stated that farmers would support protesters facing suppression.
