Risk level: Low Country: India

As per reports, following are the latest updates on the municipal elections scheduled in Andhra Pradesh as on Thursday (22 October):

• Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) State Coordinator S Ramakrishna Reddy alleged that 76 violent incidents, including attacks, arrests, house confinements, threats, and the destruction of nomination papers, occurred across eleven districts during ZPTC (Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency) and MPTC (Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituency) election nominations.
• YSR Kadapa district recorded 22 of these incidents, followed by Palnadu with 18, and Annamayya and Tirupati with 11 each, while the rest occurred across seven other districts.
• The YSRCP plans to present these details to the Supreme Court and seek the transfer or removal of responsible officials from election duties.
• Andhra Pradesh State Election Commissioner Anil Chandra Punetha directed officials in seven districts—Kadapa, Annamayya, Tirupati, Anantapur, Prakasam, Palnadu, and Markapuram—to strictly implement the Supreme Court’s directions following violent clashes during nomination filings.
• The State Election Commission deferred the poll process or restricted proceedings in specific urban local bodies and municipalities reporting large-scale complaints of intimidation and physical attacks, subject to further decisions based on district reports and Supreme Court orders.
• The Supreme Court directed the State Election Commission to consider extending the last date for filing nominations by at least 48 hours if candidates faced obstacles due to law and order issues, and mandated adequate police bandobast and closed-circuit television coverage at nomination centres.
• The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) reportedly rejected the allegations, claiming that the YSRCP orchestrated chaos and destruction to disrupt elections and filed numerous cases to stall the polls.
