As per reports, on Sunday evening (27 July), a regional passenger train (line RE 55) travelling from Sigmaringen to Ulm derailed around 1810 hours (local time) near Riedlingen, in the Biberach district of Baden-Württemberg.
• Approximately 100 passengers were onboard when at least two carriages derailed, one overturning, in a forested and difficult-to-access area roughly 45 kilometers from Ulm.
• Authorities have confirmed at least three fatalities and several serious injuries.
• The Reutlingen control center declared a ‘mass casualty incident,’ prompting a large-scale response from the fire department, rescue services, and police.
• Four rescue helicopters were deployed, and emergency crews are expected to work overnight until Monday (28 July) alongside the Federal Agency for Technical Relief to recover the derailed train cars.
• Heavy rainfall from severe thunderstorms earlier on Sunday evening (27 July) may have triggered a landslide, which investigators suspect could have contributed to the derailment.
