Student protest reported in Makassar to mark Youth Pledge Day on Tuesday (28 October)

As per reports, on Tuesday (28 October) in Makassar, South Sulawesi, multiple student groups such as Himpunan Mahasiswa Islam (HMI) (Gowa Raya), Pergerakan Mahasiswa Islam Indonesia (PMII), and Federasi Rakyat Demokrasi Makassar (FREEDOM) held a demonstration on Jalan Sultan Alauddin to mark Hari Sumpah Pemuda (Youth Pledge Day).

During the protest, the traffic was reportedly blocked with trucks and burning tires, and demonstrators demanded government action on various issues, including the free nutritious meals MBG (“Makan Bergizi Gratis”) program. In response, the police deployed nearly 2,000 officers to guard the protest and requested the students not to burn tires near a hospital zone, where tensions reportedly escalated between the police and protestors.
