As per reports, the Punjab Government Employees are observing a statewide strike on Tuesday (08 September). During the strike, the employees will abstain from work.
Following are the latest updates available:
• The ongoing agitation by Punjab government employees is primarily linked to pending Dearness Allowance (DA) installments and arrears, with employee unions seeking the release of the outstanding 18 percent DA.
• The dispute also relates to the state government’s 2020 decision concerning the pay structure of employees recruited after 17 July, 2020.
• Employee unions, including the Punjab Sanjha Mulazam Manch, are demanding the withdrawal of notices issued against protesting employees and the release of pending DA installments and arrears.
• The unions had set Monday (07 September) as a deadline for the government to withdraw the notices, failing which they announced a mass casual leave on Tuesday (08 September).
• The Punjab government has termed the proposed mass casual leave illegal and warned of action if the protest disrupts public services. Industry Minister Aman Arora stated that the DA dispute is already before the Supreme Court and said the government has decided to increase DA from 42 percent to 60 percent for around 85,000 employees, while offering salary parity with comparable Central government employees for others.
• The government has urged employees to avoid disruption and continue negotiations, while the outcome of the Supreme Court proceedings remains a key factor in the dispute.
