As per reports, the Peruvian government has declared a 30-day state of emergency in Lima and Callao, citing escalating organized crime and public safety concerns as of Thursday (27 March).
• The emergency decree grants security forces expanded powers, including restricting public gatherings and limiting freedom of movement. It also authorizes security forces to enter residences without a judicial warrant and allows them to carry out arrests without requiring a warrant.
• Additionally, President Dina Boluarte has confirmed that general elections will take place on 12 April 2026.
• This decision aims to address ongoing political instability, as Peru has seen six presidents in recent years. However, opposition groups continue to demand early elections and Boluarte’s resignation, further fueling public discontent.
