Situational update on wildfire activity reported in northern Ontario as of Thursday (20 August)

As per official updates, authorities continue to respond to widespread wildfire activity across northern Ontario as of Thursday (20 August), with 69 active wildfires in the Northwest Region and 42 in the Northeast Region.

• In northwestern Ontario, seven fires remain not under control, three are being held, 11 are under control, and the remaining fires are being observed.
• Major fires of concern include the Rinker Complex, comprising Thunder Bay 36, Dryden 34 and Dryden 35, all of which remain not under control. The Atikokan Cluster also remains active, with Fort Frances 14 and Fort Frances 15 not under control, although travel restrictions associated with these fires have been lifted. Fire activity across several major complexes has reportedly decreased following recent rainfall and ongoing suppression efforts.
• Improving conditions prompted authorities to revoke the restricted fire zone in northwestern Ontario and a small portion of northeastern Ontario from 0001 hours (0401 hours UTC) on Thursday (20 August). Implementation and evacuation orders around Thunder Bay 36 and 56 and Dryden 34 and 35 were also lifted from 0900 hours local time (1300 hours UTC) on Thursday (20 August).
• Wildfire-related transportation disruptions remain in effect. Highway 527 is closed in both directions between Kopka River and 1st Avenue in Armstrong, while Highway 811 is closed in both directions between Weaver River and Dog River Road in Armstrong. Mail delivery has also been suspended in Gull Bay and Collins due to wildfire activity.
• In northeastern Ontario, authorities are monitoring 42 active wildfires. A new fire, North Bay 39 (NOR039), was confirmed near North Bay on Wednesday (19 August). The approximately 0.1-hectare fire, located around 2.6 kilometre west of Highway 11 and 1.9 kilometre south of Bay Lake, remains not under control.
