Situational update on marine drone explosion at Port of Constanta on Friday (05 June)

As per reports, a marine drone was discovered in the early hours of Friday (05 June) at Berth 78 of the Port of Constanța, near the premises of the Romanian Agency for Human Life Saving at Sea (Agenția Română pentru Salvarea Vieții Omenești pe Mare, ARSVOM).

• The drone was initially discovered at approximately 0550 hours local time (0250 hours UTC) and subsequently self-detonated at approximately 1030 hours local time (0730 hours UTC). No casualties have been reported.
• Following the discovery, the area was secured and isolated by personnel from the Romanian Intelligence Service (Serviciul Român de Informații, SRI), the Coast Guard, and the Ministry of National Defence (Ministerul Apărării Naționale, MApN).
• The Romanian Ministry of National Defence confirmed that the drone self-detonated, and that it is of the type used in the war in Ukraine.
• The ministry specified that the object is not part of the Romanian Army’s equipment and was not involved in the recent exercises organised by the Ministry of National Defence in the Black Sea area.
• Following the explosion, the Red Intervention Plan (Plan Roșu de Intervenție) was activated at 1029 hours local time (0729 hours UTC). A Ro-Alert emergency notification was issued to residents in the coastal port area, advising them to take shelter.
