Situational update on Kilauea eruption activity as of Sunday (13 September)

Risk level: Low Country: United States

As per reports, Kīlauea remains intermittently active at the summit, with precursory lava flows continuing from the north vent in Halemaʻumaʻu Sunday (13 September).

• Reports indicate that more than 100 lava overflows have been recorded, while summit inflation and volcanic tremor continue to indicate elevated eruptive activity.
• Reportedly, volcanic gas emissions remain present around the summit, with prevailing winds potentially carrying volcanic gas, fine ash and Pele’s hair towards areas south of Kaluapele.
• Reports suggest that the eruptive activity remains confined to the closed area of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, while the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory continues to assess changes in activity and associated hazards.
